School Council

At Forge Wood Primary School, the School Council is a formal group of pupils who have been elected by their peers to represent them and their views. It’s a very important and special responsibility which is afforded to two members of each class from Reception right through to upper Key Stage 2.  

 

Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives. Forge Wood School Council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them. 

 

Children experience the democratic process both by standing in the school council elections each year, making a speech to their class to encourage their classmates to vote for them, and casting their votes in class elections. The School Council allows children to actively participate in school life and that of the wider community. It also teaches the children about local and global citizenship and accountability.  

 

School councillors collect information and opinions from their classmates, present it to the Council, hold assemblies and initiate their own ideas about potential improvements in and around the school. They strive to make a positive impact on the daily lives of all children at Forge Wood.
